Telašćica
Telašćica is a bay and natural park on the southeastern part of the island of Dugi Otok that is located just off the beautiful Dalmatian Coast, west of Zadar. Located on the biggest of the Zadarian Islands, it is a truly extraordinary natural gem and an excellent day-trip location for those who have found a vacation rental in Dalmatia. Under consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Croatia, this incredible place is a true paradise on earth and a perfect place to escape to while on holidays in Croatia.

At 10km long and 160-1800m wide, this deep inlet is dotted with cliffs, 6 islets inside the bay itself, and smaller bays, and is covered in vineyards, olive groves, fig trees, and Aleppo pine and holm oak forests. Telašćica Bay is also home to Lake Mir, a saltwater lake that is located picturesquely on a narrow strip of land between the bay and the open sea. The rich turquoise lake, wild and steep craggy cliffs, the barren karst area of the bay, islets and rocks emerging from the rich navy sea, the lush greenery of the forests: all of it paints an exceptionally scenic picture and it is the kind of restoratively beautiful landscape that one really needs to see with their own eyes.
Officially declared a Nature Park in 1988, Telašćica has been a protected area since 1980 due to its rich and important flora and fauna, its incredible geological and geomorphological phenomena, the versatile sea bottom life in the area, and, additionally, the interesting archaeological heritage of the bay. The most stunning and largest natural port in the Adriatic, offering naturally-occurring safe harbours from the sea that have long been important, the bay boasts 25 little beaches and important medicinal properties in the waters at Lake Mir (which reaches 30 degrees Celsius in the summer and is like a giant spa). it is also home to a rich Mediterranean flora of some 500 plant species and an additional 300 underwater plant species, a vibrant array of fauna and a fascinating aquatic life that boasts 300 underwater species, and the remains of ancient buildings in Mala Proversa, numerous pre-Romanesque churches, and traces of habitation since ancient times.

As one might imagine, such a wealth of natural beauty and lovely landscapes means that there are lots of different outdoor pursuits to be enjoyed in Telašćica Bay. Hiking and swimming are both very popular activities in the area with plenty of places to go for a dip between the lake and the various beaches. Hiking, in addition to being fun in its own right, is also the only way to get to some parts of the bay as cars are not allowed past a certain point. If you want to take in the truly incredible views afforded by the bay, you'll likely have to work for it a bit beforehand but the pay-off is definitely worth it! Going snorkelling is also highly recommended but be sure not to interrupt the local marine life as it is protected. Boat trips, particularly on yachts, in the area are also highly recommended and offer the most luxurious and relaxing way to experience the bay with various chartering companies offering different packages. It is worth noting, too, that both camping and any sort of climbing of the cliffs in the bay are prohibited for the protection of the landscape and your own safety. Once you've worked up an appetite from exploring the island, you'll be glad to know that there is a range of restaurants around the bay serving up delicious local specialties.

So, whether you have found a vacation rental in Dalmatia and you're going the luxurious route and chartering a private yacht to explore Telašćica Bay or you are staying in a vacation rental in Zadar and are taking a day-trip to the bay using the local ferry services, this stunning natural gem is a must-see. While some tourists have been known to complain about a lack of flashy tourist attractions in the bay, the wonderful natural beauty of the area is surely the only attraction that you need and an incredible place to escape the outside world and enjoy the majesty of the great outdoors in Croatia!
