While there is certainly plenty to keep any visitor occupied if they have found a villa in Crete, there is also boundless opportunity to see other parts of Greece on day trips while on the island. Heraklion, the largest city on the island and the capital, also happens to be a highly important port town and ferry dock that is really well- connected to the rest of the country. So, if you find a vacation rental in Heraklion, you can certainly spend time exploring all the city has to offer (of which there is plenty) but you can also take the opportunity to experience a bit more of Greece while you are at it. Some of the destinations that are connected to Heraklion by boat or ferry include Santorini, Ios Island, Paros, Mykonos, Rhodes, Naxos, Karpathos, Kasos, Sitia, Anafi, Chalki, Diafani, and several daily ferries to Piraeus.

If you think of a holiday in Crete or Greece, you are likely to picture plenty of time on her incredible beaches, enjoying the stunning deep blue of the sea meeting the pale shores, the pleasant water temperatures, the great weather, and the beautiful surroundings. However, in addition to her beaches, her most obvious and well-known trait, the island is also home to lots of other amazing natural wonders and little surprises to uncover as you explore. One such incredible gem is Lake Kournas.

The only freshwater lake in Crete, this relatively large (at a maximum length of 1.087km and a maximum breadth of 0.88km) and shallow (at 22.5m at its deepest point) but stunning lake is located in a valley among the hills, surrounded by a particularly beautiful landscape, just a few kilometres from the sea. Known as Lake Koressia in antiquity, it is now named for the Arabic word, “kurna,” for, “lake,” (or bath) so calling it Lake Kournas in English is kind of like calling it Lake Lake!

The north of Greece is probably somewhat unlike the vision of the country that you have in mind. It is vast and lush and very green. It is full of endless forests, winding rivers, wide lakes, fertile valleys, craggy mountains, rolling hills, and stunning and varied landscapes. From tasting wine in vineyards to hanging out in naturally occurring hot springs and from hiking and skiing on snow-capped peaks to tackling river rapids, there are all sorts of adventures for all sorts of people that find a vacation rental in Central Macedonia. However, if you are looking for lots of adventure in just one place, then we recommend a day trip to the Nestos Adventure Park.

Around 30km from the city of Kavala is the Nestos National Park which is a nature reserve and an area around the Nestos River that is divided into the Nestos Gorge at Toxotes and the Nestos delta at Chrysoupolis. A place of particular natural beauty, you will find lots of special eco systems, a diverse flora and fauna, alluvial land, freshwater lakes and lagoons, river forests, open meadows, mountains and more. As a result, it is the perfect place to establish an adventure centre!
