A vacation rental in Heraklion is already perfect for history buffs as the entire stunning city is home to some gorgeous old buildings and an excellent Archaeological Museum as well as being positioned close to the Minoan sites of Knossos and Phaestos but the wonderful Natural History Museum is the real cherry on top!

Founded in 1980 and located in the building that once housed the Heraklion Public Power Corporation since 2007, the Natural History Museum of Crete in Heraklion is the largest exhibition of its kind in the Mediterranean and operates under the auspices of the University of Crete. Showcasing the present and historic natural environment of both Crete itself and the wider Mediterranean, this engaging and invigorating museum employs innovative displays and exhibits to inform and thrill visitors! 

The Greek island of Crete is famously beautiful, with a landscape of picturesque little white-washed towns topped by blue church domes and ancient ruins, rugged mountains traversed by climbers and goats alike, lush green valleys cut through by impressive gorges and silver rivers, picture-perfect beaches framed by dramatic cliffs and lapped by sparkling azure waters, and much more besides. Once you have found your vacation rental in Crete, no visit would be complete without taking in the renowned Palace of Knossos. Perched atop Kephala Hill, this palace, once the majestic capital of Minoan Crete, stands as a captivating reminder of a bygone empire. Human traces on this site date as far back as the Neolithic period (7000 to 3000BC), with various palaces erected there since 1900BC. The final palace fell to ruins in 1350BC, with the site being reoccupied from the Late Mycenaean period through to Roman times. Its legacy is tied to iconic Greek legends like the Labyrinth and the tale of Daidalos and Ikaros.
