If you have found a vacation rental in Paris, it is likely that you have plans to visit a few museums. However, if you wanted to try something a little bit different, there is a rather unique museum that should make it onto your list: “The Museum of Vampires and Legendary Creatures”.

Okay, technically, this museum is not actually located in Paris but on the outskirts, in Lilas, but is still accessible by the Paris Métro and is just a 15-minute Métro ride from the center of town. The closest Métro station to the museum is Porte des Lilas but the journey from Mairie des Lilas is much simpler.
The museum was established by Jacques Sirgent, an eccentric but highly knowledgeable scholar and specialist of the macabre, who researches vampirism, esoterism and occidental folkore. He is also the greatest selling-point of a trip. The museum is not freely open to the public and appointments need to be made to visit but, once you manage to nail down a trip, Sirgent himself will be your guide (and speaks impeccable English as he is an English teacher and Bram Stoker translator by day – so that's helpful!). He will talk you through the history of Paris, cemeteries where vampiric rituals were once practiced and endless other tales of legendary creepiness as well as historic fact.

In addition, the display is fascinating; a genuine 19th century vampire killing kit, Hammer Film collectibles, Dracula toys, antique books, a large gothic-style indoor garden and all sorts of oddities and intriguing bits and bobs obtained online, at Montreuil flea markets or in graveyards…
To make an appointment, phone 01 43 62 80 76, where you will be met by a recorded message in French listing the hours and a cell phone number — 06 20 12 28 32 — with which you can connect to Sirgent directly. If you turn up unannounced, be aware that you will not be granted access to the museum. To some, this might seem like a lot of effort but this museum is one of the most unique and fascinating in France and is a particular must-see for anyone intrigued by the occult, supernatural and myths and legends as well as genuine folk history.
