In the past two posts in this series, we have been discussing the lovely island of Lokrum and its spooky history. A beautiful mass of land located just off the coast of Croatia by Dubrovnik, it is a must-see for anyone who has found a holiday rental in Dubrovnik. In addition to its various attractions, it has a rather creepy reason to visit, especially if you are someone who is interested in such things; the Curse of Lokrum. From its origins as the punishment left behind by exiled monks to the numerous lives lost and ruined by the curse, it is a fascinating tale and continued into the 19th century where our tale picks up...
After everything that had happened, it is understandable that legends and myths began to crop up around the island. The true stories became distorted and exaggerated and, for a long time, Lokrum was widely avoided. Tales of how criminals would be punished by being pushed off the cliffs during the Middle Ages, of how Richard the Lion-heart of England wrecked on its shores, of how a prisoner on the Austrian ship “Triton” was the sole survivor of an explosion aboard, of a cursed necklace made from the singular coral found in the area and more.
These legends swirled around the island and, for a long time, it remained utterly abandoned. However, today it has become a popular excursion site for tourists and sees plenty of visitors, most of whom never have such dramatic incidents befall them. So, if you're interested in this cursed island but don't want to experience the curse for yourself, never fear, it seems that tourists are exempt today!
If you are coming to enjoy Dubrovnik this fall and enjoy the still warm weather, smaller tourist crowds and Autumnal charm, then make sure to also make the most of this appropriately spooky destination this Hallowe'en.
