Better still is a visit to a local winery to learn about an area's wines and wine production, to sample a few varieties, perhaps buy a couple of bottles, and enjoy the scenic setting of the business. Alexakis, a family-owned-and-run winery, is the largest winery on Crete and has a storage capacity of a staggering 16 million litres. It is quite the operation!

Founded by oenologist-chemical engineer Stelios Alexakis in the 1970s, the winery is managed today by Stelios, who runs the place alongside his wife, Sofia, and their two sons, Lazaros and Apostolo. They work on a contract-farming basis with grape growers all over the island, especially in the Heraklion region, to produce award-winning wines that are recognised in Greece and around the world. Drawing on the deep knowledge and history of Cretan vineyards, they carefully craft the most amazing high quality wines.
The winery also offers three different tour and tasting packages that are incredible bargains! The first costs just €3, lasts 30 minutes and is comprised of a guided tour of the winery’s production facilities, a guided tour of a vineyard and a wine-tasting of Alexakis Kariki (a dry red) and Alexakis Kariki (a dry white). Meanwhile, the second option costs €6 and includes more wines including the Alexakis Kariki (both red & white varieties), as well as the Alexakis Vidiano (white), Alexakis Kotsifali-Syrah (red), Meligyris Honey and Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the 2015 harvest. The final option costs €10, includes the previous first two wines as well as the Alexakis Hatiri, Alexakis Vidiano (white), Alexakis Kotsifali-Syrah (red), Meligyris Honey, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and a meal of cold Cretan dishes.
