Come Hang Out On The Stunning Beaches Of Vis In Croatia

The island of Vis is in the Split-Dalmatia region and is the farthest inhabited island in Croatia. It is a beautiful place with a mild Mediterranean climate that is ideal for growing delicious food and for establishing successful vineyards and a location right out in the open sea that has allowed a strong fishing culture to be born and maintained on the island. These two traits have also meant that Vis has been a popular tourist destination for a long time as well. With its gorgeous old buildings, pretty landscape, excellent restaurants, natural phenomena like the Blue Grotto, and amazing beaches, Vis has a lot to offer and is an ideal day-trip destination for those who have found a vacation rental in Split and are looking for something special to do during their stay in the area.

While Vis has plenty of charms and a good deal to see and do, her beaches are one of the most enduringly popular and appealing traits that keep people coming to experience it for themselves. There are plenty to choose from and they all benefit from the unspoiled nature of the landscape of Vis, the crystal-clear waters, and the tranquillity offered by the presence of considerably smaller tourist crowds compared to other parts of the Dalmatian Coast.

Stončica Beach is a sandy beach positioned in a long bay that is characterised by its pretty little lighthouse and is located just a ten minute walk from the island’s main town of Vis. Ideal for families, it boasts a little beach bar and palm trees and tamarix plants that offer much-needed shade and relief from the hot sun during summer months.

If you head to the old fisherman’s settlement of Rukavac, to the southeast of the island, you will find the beautiful pebble beach of Srebrna and the famous natural phenomenon that is the Green Cave. Rich with underwater creatures that dart around beneath the crystal-clear surface, it an ideal spot for those interested in fishing, swimming, and snorkelling. It also boasts a snack bar, toilets, trees that offer shade, and a nearby supermarket.

The town of Komiža, on the sunny west coast of Vis has a large bay that looks out onto the open sea and the little islands of Biševo and Svetac and boasts several lovely pebble beaches, with the most popular being Kamenice Beach. Head here to enjoy the sun and fun and then indulge in a delicious seafood meal in this settlement which is particularly known for its fishing.

Zaglav Beach, located to the south-east of the island, in a cove a ten minute walk from the tourist town of Milna, is a lovely beach that has soft white sand and is framed by white rocks and rich greenery that only makes the vibrant blue of the water stand out even more. There are public restrooms, changing rooms, a snack bar, and umbrella and lounger rentals and it is a very quiet and peaceful spot.

Also by Milna is Milna Beach, a long soft sandy beach that has shallow waters extending more than 30m from the coast, which make it popular for families and those interested in playing picigin, a game in which players must keep a small ball in the air, without letting it fall in the water. Like Zaglav, there are umbrella and deck chair rentals on the beach and it is mostly used by locals, leaving it peaceful and largely free of tourists for pretty much the whole year. Exceptionally lush and pretty, it is a perfect chill-out spot.

Near to Milna, you will find the islet of Veli Budihovac, located around 700 metres off the southern coast of Vis, which can be easily reached by boat from the towns of Rukavac and Milna. Small and uninhabited, the island is famous for its beautiful lagoon that has a little pebble beach, Budihovac Beach. Impossibly remote, perfect, and stunning, this is the ultimate escape destination.

Finally, one cannot mention the best beaches of Vis without talking about Stiniva Beach. Located in the south of the island, it is famous for its unique and incredible appearance: framed by tall craggy white cliffs that are topped by lush greenery, with only a small opening or “sea door” out to the coast. Voted by the tourism organisation European Best Destinations, as the most beautiful beach in Europe, it has been a protected natural monument since 1967. However, this reputation has meant that it is now the most popular beach on the island. If you want to find less tourists at Stiniva Beach, then visit around May or June instead or head before 10.30 in the morning or after 4pm. After 4pm, shade will have come down over the shore of the bay, leading many to leave but if that doesn’t bother you then come along anyway. While you’re in the area, you might consider grabbing food in Tavern Peruka, which is set in the shade of the high cliffs and offers food from breakfast to dinner and drinks from juices and coffee to beer and local wines.
