Capri is a stunning island located just off the north coast of the Gulf of Naples, that makes for a remarkable day-trip spot if you have found a vacation rental in Campania or a villa on the Amalfi Coast. Known as a dream holiday destination and an incredibly beautiful gem, it boasts wonderful beaches, pretty towns, bays full of colourful fishing boats and yachts, and the most pleasing coastal scenery. However, its beauty is probably at its apex at the Grotta Azzurra, or Blue Grotto. This impossibly famous and truly magical tourist attraction and natural phenomenon is the type that draws people from all over the world to see it for themselves and if you are one of those people, then it is a great reason to start browsing our holiday rentals on the Amalfi Coast and get planning a trip to this fantastic part of Italy today.
Otherworldly in its beauty, the Grotta Azzurra is a famous sea cave that is lit by an eerily lovely blue light. Known to locals since ancient times and the personal swimming hole of Emperor Tiberius (who loved Capri so much that he made it the capital of the Roman Empire in 27 AD), the grotto was lavishly outfitted with statues and lounging areas around the water's edge. Despite this, the Grotta Azzurra became more obscure in the following centuries, remaining known only to local fishermen. In 1826, however, it was rediscovered by the German poet, Augustus Kopisch, and a painter named Ernst Fries. Kopisch wrote about it in his book, “Entdeckung der Blauen Grotte,” and word quickly spread about the remarkable sight until it became a fixture for those travelling Europe, drawing the likes of Mark Twain to come see it for themselves. Today, it is one of the most famous attractions of the natural world and continues to draw visitors from all over the globe.
Measuring 60m by 25m, it is illuminated by daylight entering from above and refracting on the water, causing the cave to glow blue. Visitors can get to the cave via boat from Marina Grande, a bus from Anacapri, or by taking the well-marked trail from the town. If the weather conditions are agreeable and the waves are not too big or it is not too windy, then visitors can enter. This is done by rowboat, lying down on the bottom, while an oarsman directs the vessel towards the cliffs, waits for a lull in the waves and then ducks under a low opening in the cliff-face.
A visit to the Grotta Azzurra is just one of many magical attractions and experiences to be had if you find a vacation rental on the Amalfi Coast so what are you waiting for? It's time to get planning your dream holiday in Italy today!
