Donostia-San Sebastián, beach
The Basque Country of Spain is located to the north and centre of the country and is famous for being one of the best foodie destinations in the world, for its incredible art, architecture, and culture (boasting international film festivals, world-leading art institutions like that at Bilbao, UNESCO World Heritage sites aplenty), and for its truly beautiful beaches and stunning scenery. In the north of the region, you will find the province of Guipúzcoa, which is particularly famed for its food and is home to the Basque Coast where the region's most outstanding beaches are located. One such beach fronts the incredibly pretty capital of Donostia-San Sebastián.

Donostia-San Sebastián (or Donostia in Basque and San Sebastián in Spanish) is located in the Bay of Biscay, not far from the border with France, and is one of the most famous and popular tourist attractions in Spain. Put on the map by the San Sebastián International Film Festival, this very charming city in the Basque Country of Spain is a hub of culture and a serious looker. Surrounded by lush green hills and then clustered around a large and golden crescent-shaped beach lapped by aquamarine waves, the city is a jewel where stunning natural surroundings and landscapes meet exceptional architectural gems.
Donostia-San Sebastián, streets
As Donostia-San Sebastián was once a favoured holiday destination of the Spanish Royal Family, it is understandable that the city has an elegant appearance and is characterised by a slew of wonderful art nouveau buildings, ornate bridges, cobblestone streets, manicured parks, and little boutiques and buzzing bars clustered around open plazas. And, while there are, of course, more modern interventions and resorts that have been built in recent years, the city has largely managed to maintain an air of Old World elegance and charm that causes visitors to fall deeply in love with the place.

Of course, it is not only aesthetic appeal that Donostia-San Sebastián has to offer the discerning tourist. One may not expect it from a glance at the city, given its size, but it boasts a diverse calendar of cultural events throughout the year including its famous International Film Festival in September, which draws some of the biggest stars of cinema. Additionally, there is the famous Semana Grande, a traditional celebration (not unlike Carnival celebrations in Venice) that involves a whole week of parties and fun, as well as music festivals, foodie festivals celebrating the great culinary heritage of the area, folk festivals celebrating Basque culture and traditions, plays and performances in the various theatres in town, art exhibitions and more in the city's museums and galleries, and much more besides.
Donostia-San Sebastián, panorama
Between wandering on the streets, playing on the beaches, partying or attending cultural events, stimulating the mind and the senses, one is bound to work up an appetite and, as we have mentioned, Donostia-San Sebastián is a foodie destination on par with any other foodie haven in the globe. Head to a buzzing pinxtos bar to try Basque tapas and have a few drinks, enjoy the freshest of oysters and the local lightly sparkling white txakoli wine in a seaside eatery, or, if you're a serious foodie with the budget or the desire to save up for a one-off culinary experience, head to one of the Michelin-starred gems in town for a veritable feast. But, no matter your budgets or tastes, you're likely to find something truly delicious to eat in Donostia-San Sebastián! If you're looking for elegance, the best that food and culture have to offer, and stunning surroundings, few destinations in the world can quite compete with this beautiful part of the Basque Country and of Spain so be sure to plan a day trip if you are in the area.
