A vacation rental in Crete is a wonderful idea for those who love the great outdoors. It is famously home to some truly exceptional beaches and has a diverse and picturesque landscape, both of which afford the natural facilities necessary for all kinds of adventures. Whether you're interested in swimming, kayaking, snorkelling, cycling, walking, rafting, exploring caves, canyoning, hiking, or more, you'll be able to find somewhere to do it while on vacation in Crete. In particular, the hiking possibilities are especially rich and scenic from the wonderful views and range of routes afforded by the impressive peaks of the White Mountains and National Park on the western side of the island, near Samariá Gorge, to the famous and well-trodden canyon trails through Chania and Imbros Gorge. Another excellent and highly picturesque hiking option that is especially magical is the route through Richtis Gorge that ends at a majestic waterfall.
Richtis Gorge is located in a state-protected park near Exo Mouliana, Sitia, in eastern Crete, Greece. Just a few kilometers long and not especially difficult, this is an excellent option for beginners, those with kids in the party, or those looking for something that packs a serious punch. The whole route should only take a couple of hours each way and the elevation difference between the starting point and the beach is about 350 meters in total. The only real concern or consideration to keep in mind is that sections of the trail can be quite steep with stones that make it slippery. Just be sure to take these areas slowly and to watch your footing so that you do not fall. It is also probably a good idea to ensure that you are wearing sturdy and closed shoes to improve your grip and protect your feet.

Starting out at the traditional village Exo Mouliana, the trail officially begins at the Lachanas Bridge, a beautiful 19th-century stone bridge with a terrible history as it is said to be where Turkish people were killed in the exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s, and ultimately leads to a secluded beach. In the relatively short distance of the trail, you will find yourself passing and taking in all sorts of scenes and wonderful sights including flowers, herbs, tress, wild berries, butterflies, reptiles, birds, old stone bridges, hills, ridges, water mills, and more before passing by the Richtis Waterfall and eventually ending at Richtis Beach. The blending of picturesque manmade monuments from the past with great untouched and undisturbed natural beauty is truly breathtaking and it is one of the most diversified hiking experiences in Crete.
The presence of the waterfall along the way makes for a perfect place to stop, take a breather, dive into the waters and cool off, admire your stunning surroundings, refuel with a picnic or a snack, and then continue on to the pebbly Richtis Beach at the end for further relaxation and fun in the water. Just be sure to forgo sunscreen if you are planning on swimming in the river or pool by the waterfall as the chemicals can effect the delicate flora and fauna of the area. Make sure to cover up lightly and wear a hat during your hike until you've had your swim and then apply your sunscreen once you're out of the water and headed to enjoy the beach. You should also make sure to set aside a whole day for the hiking, swimming, adventure, and beach fun that is all afforded by a visit to Richtis Gorge – you'll need it to do it justice!
Scenic, utterly singular, and magical, a trek through Richtis Gorge and a day admiring the natural beauty of the area is a must for discerning outdoorsy types who have found a villa in Crete and are looking for the best adventures to be had in this stunning part of Greece.
