Cabourg is one of Normandy’s most picturesque seaside resorts. A simple fishing and farming village until the middle of the 19th century, it was transformed by Parisian businessman Henri Durand-Morimbau, who had a vision of what it could be once railway lines made the town easily accessible to Parisians looking to escape the city. Under Durand-Morimbau, the town was completely redesigned and turned into a rather stunning place, full of architectural gems. Boasting lots of ornate buildings, the architectural character of Cabourg is eclectic, Belle Époque, and opulent. A wonderful place to enjoy the seaside during a vacation in Normandy and a unique town with a distinct look, there is something almost a little Gothic about it all and certainly a singular and cinematic feeling. One can feel as though they have fallen back through time or ended up in some sort of fantastical film as they wander about the place. So, find a villa in Cabourg and come enjoy this gorgeous stretch of the coast while admiring the backdrop of steep roofs and turrets with elaborate finials, balconies, intricate details, the multicoloured brick work and wood-panelled facades, and gardens full of blooms.
The resort of Cabourg was opened in 1855 and the fashion for sea bathing of the time ensured its continued rapid expansion. Architect Paul Leroux designed a plan for the town that was inspired by a Greco-Roman theatre, unfolding as a semi-circle of buildings that faced the sea, and the wealthy and famous began to buy villas in the area. The competition to display one’s wealth and taste meant that the lovely villas of the town were carefully constructed and made more and more elaborate, resulting in the extraordinary selection of properties that still exist in the town to this day. Then, between 1907 and 1914, Marcel Proust, the great French writer, reserved a room at the legendary Grand Hôtel, adding to the reputation and fame of the town and becoming one of the many artists who were drawn to Cabourg.

Proust's biographer, George D. Painter, tells us that, “the modern Cabourg began in 1853 with the arrival of two Paris financiers in search of a new site for a luxurious watering-place. The railway age had made the Normandy coast accessible to holiday-makers; Dieppe, Trouville and Deauville to the east had already been discovered; but here the adventurers found a virgin expanse of barren dunes and level sea-sands ripe for development. By the 1880s an unreal city of villas and hotels had arisen, in a semicircle whose diameter was the seafront, whose centre was the Grand Hotel, and whose radii were traced by a fan-work of avenues shaded with limes and Normandy poplars.”
Home of one of the loveliest beaches in the region, stretching 4km along the front of the town, Cabourg boasts a promenade all along this sea-front that is named for Proust and makes for an ideal place to stroll and take in the charms of both the coast and the town's Belle Époque architecture. Many who visit the town make a point to go on a self-guided tour of the many architectural gems and stunning villas in Cabourg but simply exploring the town without a plan in mind will mean that you will encounter plenty of incredible buildings.

In addition to the coast and the rich architectural heritage of the town, you will discover lots of beautiful gardens. Cabourg has earned two flower-related certifications for its various flowerbeds and is home to a great number of parks and gardens. Each spring, it also hosts Garden en Fleurs, a weekend-long festival celebrating the gardens and blooms of the town with various events. One of the resorts of the so-called Côte Fleurie (Flowery Coast), an area known for its nature, meadows, parks, and private gardens, Cabourg is ranked among the most impressive of the Villes Fleuries (Flowery Cities). So, garden-lovers will find that a vacation rental in Cabourg or a visit to the town during a holiday in Normandy is sure to delight.

Furthermore, the town hosts some impressive cultural events annually that ensure a summer holiday in Cabourg has plenty to offer the discerning culture vulture as well as those looking to relax in this charming seaside resort. Among these events, the most famous and well-known are the Cabourg Mon Amour Music Festival and the Cabourg Romantic Film Festival.
