Dating back to the era when Islamic rule reigned over Al-Andalus, encompassing Spain, Portugal, and a small portion of Southern France until the late 8th century, the Great Mosque is one of the oldest structures that remains from this period and was built by the Umayyads, an exiled Islamic dynasty that had previously governed present-day Syria. The Great Mosque was expanded over two centuries into the awe-inspiring and impossibly grand UNESCO-awarded wonder that we see today.
An immense complex, some of the main areas include a vast hypostyle prayer hall, a central courtyard adorned with a fountain and orange grove, a minaret, the striking horseshoe arched mihrab (the wall indicating the direction of Mecca for daily prayers), and a lavish gold mosaic dome. After the recapturing of Córdoba in 1236 by the Christian forces, the building was used by their monarchs and altered for their own purposes. As a result, the Villaviciosa and Royal Chapels were added in the mid-13th century under King Alfonso X and a Renaissance nave was added at the heart of the mosque in the 16th century under Charles V. This created an outstanding and fascinating fusion of styles.
