1. The Weather

Due to the way Estepona is specifically located and laid out, nestled between mountains and the sea, the town has not only a dreamy subtropical Mediterranean climate but a particular microclimate, as we mentioned. This means that the area boasts not only more than 325 days of sun but also an annual average temperature of 19°C (66°F). Winters are very mild and humid, with daily temperature averages in December and January of around 15°C (59°F) and not much rain. Early autumn and late spring can usually be depended upon to be hot enough for beach holidays for many. The summer, too, is perfect in Estepona. While it can get incredibly hot, the summers here are relatively stable with averages for June, July, and August being 22.6°C (72.7°F), 24.9°C (76.8°F), and 25.1°C (77.2°F). Temperatures soaring over 35°C during the hottest days of the summer are not rare but, generally, you can expect slightly more pleasant weather. This gorgeous town along the Costa del Sol is, therefore, ideal pretty much year round for a getaway if you find a holiday rental in Estepona and are after sun, fun, and relaxation!

2. The Beaches

With 21km of coastline and 17 different beaches to choose from, Estepona is a beach-lover's dream destination. Of course, the Blue Flag beaches are a highlight, boasting incredible natural beauty and great facilities and meeting all of the necessary standards of water quality, environmental management, safety and services, and information and environmental education. One of these Blue Flag recipients is the 700m-long Playa del Cristo. Family friendly, it is located in a sheltered position in a small cove and is protected from wind and waves and has shallow waters. It also boasts two chiringuitos (beach bars), sunbed rentals, access for those with disabilities, and on-duty lifeguards. The other Blue Flag beach in Estepona is Arroyo Vaquero and this is a nudist strand with a rocky seabed that is ideal for divers. A semi-urban beach, it is a little quieter and doesn’t have all of the services of some of the others in the area but still has parking and nearby snack bars so you’ll still find everything you need for a day on the coast. Those who want all of the bells and whistles, however, can go to the 2.6km long Playa de la Rada, the largest beach in the town and the closest to its historic centre and plenty of other attractions and dining options. Along the beach itself, there are playgrounds, trampolines, a basketball court, a fitness trail, beach bars serving up some the best tapas in the city, and much more besides to see and do. Among all of the options on offer, there really is something for everyone who finds a vacation rental in Estepona!

Old Town, Estepona

3. The Old Town

Almost entirely traffic-free, kept spotlessly clean by the proud locals, and typically Andalusian with its whitewashed buildings and winding streets, all especially decked out in colourful blooms, the Centro Historico (or Old Town) of Estepona is a magical thing to behold. Merely wandering around, taking it all in, and getting some great commemorative snaps is an activity in its own right. However, this is also were you’ll find architectural gems worth exploring like the 15th century fortress that is the Castillo de San Luis and lots of little picturesque squares where you can sit outside cafes and restaurants and watch the world go by during a holiday in Estepona

4. The Varied Tourist Attractions

In addition to the impeccable atmosphere of the Old Town, a getaway in Estepona also boasts easy access to a variety of intriguing tourist attractions all throughout the surrounding neighbourhoods. One of the highlights is the Ruta de los Murales Artisticos, a tangle of streets that are quite distinct from the whitewashed and historic part of the town as they are covered in colourful murals. Painted on the sides of apartment buildings and office blocks, these murals vary greatly in size, style, and subject-matter and there are absolutely loads of them to discover. Maps of the murals can be found in the tourist office by the harbour or in Plaza de Las Flores and are helpful if you really want to dive in! Another of the town’s most unique attractions is the Dólmenes de Coromínas, an underground museum and necropolis that houses 5 tombs dating back to around 3000BC. In addition to these remarkably well-preserved dolmen tombs, the incredibly sleek and modern museum also houses ancient jewellery, ceramics, stone tools, skulls and bones, and more. Those interested in plants should definitely visit the extraordinary Orchidarium of Estepona, where you can view more than 5,000 plants and more than 1,300 species of orchids from all around the world. And, if you have a car and are ready to head out of town for the day, you’ll find the brilliant Selwo Aventura Wildlife Park 15 minutes away in the hills over Estepona. A 100-hectare wildlife park that is home to over 2,000 animals (including lions, giraffes, elephants, red-pandas, tigers, zebras, rhinos, and more), it also has all sorts of rides and activities that kids will enjoy like trampolines, zip-lines, and archery.

5. The Marina

If you are instead after a bit more of an elegant vibe, however, or want to add a dash of it to your evenings after days of darting around and seeing it all, then Estepona’s stunning marina is just the thing. Dotted with colourful little boats and gleaming yachts bobbing on the sparkling and crystal-clear water, this is the town’s lively foodie hub with an array of exceptional tapas bars, wonderful restaurants, and cafes for you to choose from. Popular among both locals and tourists alike, it has a brilliant atmosphere and is a buzzing and romantic space in which to grab a bite and some drinks during a vacation in Estepona.
