When is the best time to go to Croatia?

This is the sort of question that is asked of our colleagues often and, unfortunately, there is not really a singular answer – it depends! What do you want from your vacation? What is your budget? How hot do you like it to be during your holiday? These sorts of follow-up questions are all important to decide when you, specifically, should book your villa in Croatia

Of course, travelling to Croatia during the summer months is ideal for serious sun-worshippers and those who want to really enjoy a seaside break. It is also the only option for some who want to travel with kids who are in school during the school year or who can only book their vacation during the summer months themselves.

If, however, you are not as much of a fan of sizzling weather and you can travel whenever you please, we would vote that May and September through October have lots of things that particularly recommend them as the best time to plan a vacation in Croatia.

May is when spring really begins to transition into summer weather in Croatia but it is just before the larger influx of tourists begins to descend. Popular destinations such as Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, and more will still have a steady enough trickle of visitors for much of the year but the bigger crowds of tourists will have yet to really take root. It’s also easier to find a perfect villa in Croatia at this time of the year and prices are just that little bit lower, making it an ideal time to get the most for your money. The sea may be a little cool for some but most will find it pleasant and the milder weather is ideal for a host of other activities in Croatia such as hiking, cycling, exploring the national parks and natural wonders such as the waterfalls and lush greenery in the Plitvice Lakes National Park, and more.

September and October are similarly pleasant for the milder - but still perfectly enjoyable - temperatures that will allow visitors who book a vacation rental in Croatia to enjoy the pebble beaches and impossibly blue waters of the coastline, without throngs of other tourists around. Once again, it might not be advisable for those who need it to be super hot to enjoy a day by the sea to come to Croatia at this time of the year but most will be able to still have a perfect seaside getaway. The weather conditions in the fall also make it a great time to book a holiday rental in Istria and head away from the coastline altogether and inland to Green Istria instead, where you can explore the landscapes of this magical region as they begin to change to autumnal hues. Istrian truffles and harvest season wines and other delights mean that those who like to eat well will also be very well catered to by an autumn escape in Croatia. The often Italian-influenced dishes of the country are hearty and perfect for cosy fall days.

From November to April, many businesses close and tourists almost entirely disappear. Winter weather in Croatia can also get very cold – expect snow! – but this is the most budget-friendly time of the year to visit and you will get a rather more authentic experience as this is when it’s all about local life. If you’re not after a proper scorching winter sun holiday and, instead, want to enjoy the cultural life of Croatia, you’ll still find things to delight and entertain from the Zagreb Film Festival in November to the markets and mulled wine at Christmas in many of the major towns and cities to the wild carnival in Rijeka each February.

So, it really does depend on what you want but there's always a perfect time for you to book your holiday in Croatia!
