A man scuba-diving

If you like scuba-diving and escaping into the quiet and peace of the underwater world then few destinations around the world could be as truly idyllic as Greece. With lots of areas now under protection, crystal-clear waters, fascinating coastlines, and an abundance of marine species to acquaint yourself with, the seas around Greece boast perfect conditions to enjoy scuba-diving expeditions. In particular, Crete is an especially great destination to enjoy the activity and as we have a wonderful selection of villas in Crete to choose from, it couldn’t be easier to book your next trip and have a holiday full of days enjoying the famously beautiful beaches of the island from above and below the waves!

One of the best spots along the craggy and lovely coast of Crete for scuba-diving is Schinaria (or Skinaria), 33km south of Rethymno and 3km south of the village Lefkogia, to the east of the Plakias area. A pretty little beach of soft grey-beige sand to the north and a mixture of sand and pebbles elswhere, it is lapped by rich blue and perfectly clear water that quickly deepens and yet also boasts truly impressive water clarity, usually exceeding 40m in horizontal direction. These ideal conditions make it easy to readily observe the great number of different species that live in the area. Truly teeming with different marine species, the waters of Schinaria are home to a variety of morays, blackfish, octopus, and many other species.

The gorgeous Mykonos is one of Greece’s most popular holiday locations and must-see destinations. It is easy to see why: it is an utterly stunning island dotted with pretty whitewashed towns, rich blue-coloured domed churches, cute tavernas, little boutiques and shops, trendy bars, donkeys carrying bundles up hillsides, and excellent spots to watch the incredible watercolour sunsets that put on performances above the island each night. If you want to get well and truly away from it all and enjoy the peace and relaxation that the slower pace of life on the Greek islands affords, then just find a vacation rental in Mykonos or a holiday rental in the South Aegean and either stay on the island or visit it for day trips.

While you visit the island, be sure to set aside some time to head to the Armenistis Lighthouse, a pretty and still-functioning historic lighthouse that offers one of the best and most heartrendingly beautiful views on the island. Located to the north-west of the island, above a homonymous bay, Armenistis Lighthouse was built after the wrecking of an English ship on the shores nearby in the 19th century, which left 11 crew members dead. It became apparent that something needed to be done to help prevent such tragedies from happening again in the future and, in 1891, a lighthouse was built.     Read More
