Balos Beach, Crete

Balos Lagoon, or Balos Beach, is located on the west coast of Crete and is formed of long strips of pinkish sand and shallow waters.

One of the best spots along the craggy and lovely coast of Crete for scuba-diving is Schinaria (or Skinaria), 33km south of Rethymno and 3km south of the village Lefkogia, to the east of the Plakias area. A pretty little beach of soft grey-beige sand to the north and a mixture of sand and pebbles elswhere, it is lapped by rich blue and perfectly clear water that quickly deepens and yet also boasts truly impressive water clarity, usually exceeding 40m in horizontal direction. These ideal conditions make it easy to readily observe the great number of different species that live in the area. Truly teeming with different marine species, the waters of Schinaria are home to a variety of morays, blackfish, octopus, and many other species.
