1. Real Alcázar

One of the most beautiful palaces in the entire world, the Alcázar of Seville is a royal palace that was originally developed by Moorish Muslim kings and one of the most outstanding examples of mudéjar architecture. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe. While older buildings existed on the site in the past, the current palace structure largely dates to the 12th and 13th centuries.

Isla Mágica made headlines a decade ago when Tom Cruise had a real-life movie magic moment and rented out the whole theme park for a day for his daughter Suri while in the area filming the movie, “Knight and Day.” However, you don’t need to pull that kind of massive surprise or have exclusive access to enjoy this incredible place. Various different structures existed on the site of the palace, as do earlier fortifications for local rulers, the current building, however, largely dates to the 12th and 13th centuries. The Almohades were the first to build a palace, that was called Al-Muwarak, on the site of the modern day Alcázar.

The Plaza de España, in Seville, was built for the Ibero-American Exhibition in 1929, as were many of the pavilions that you can still see in the area around the Parque Maria Luisa. A semi-circular brick building executed in a combination of Renaissance and Neo-Moorish styles, it is a vast and beautiful building. 50,000 square metres in size, as large as five football pitches, it was designed by architect Anibal Gonzalez to wow the exhibitors and visitors from around the world, as well as showcase Seville's excellent craftsmanship and one can imagine that its sheer scale and incredible beauty did just that.

Situated in Maria Luisa Park, it is now home to various government offices, including the offices that issue IDs and the NIE (Numero de Identificacion de Extranjero) to those who have moved to Spain from abroad. However, while the interior is for official purposes, the picturesque exterior has ensured that this lovely building remains a tourist attraction and a particularly photogenic one, at that.
