The name of Imerovigli comes from the word “vigla” which comes from the Latin verb “vigliare”, meaning “to guard” or “to act as a look-out”, and the Greek “imera”, meaning “day”. This name makes a lot of sense, considering the position of the village, which provides a clear view of the Santorini caldera.
Blazing Sunset
Once a strategic necessity to warn villagers of the approach of pirate ships, it is now the “balcony of the Aegean” and one of the things that makes the village most popular to visitors, especially come sunset. The sunsets of Imerovigli are some of the most spectacular in the world, ranging from pretty pastel hues to burning pinks and reds that set the water on fire.

Traditional houses are plentiful in Imerovigli, all crowding romantically to the coast and looking down upon the waters. Thankfully, Imerovigli has been declared a traditional settlement and rules and regulations have been put in place to preserve it.

However, in spite of this, there are still plenty of lovely bars and cafes located along the coast with excellent views to the caldera, where you can sit, grab a beverage and properly take the scenery and sunset in.
Pastel Sunset
Stare out across the water and you will see an enormous rock called Skaros, the 13th century castle that tops it and the Santorini volcano.

From the incredible settlement and the iconic buildings themselves to the view, there is a reason why this is considered by many the most beautiful and romantic of all Greek villages and it certainly is one of the highlights of any exploration of Greece. If you are a connoisseur of sunsets, in particular, it really is a must.
