Those who find vacation rentals in Split-Dalmatia will quickly realise that there is no shortage of wonderful beaches to visit in the area. However, did you know that Croatia has a riviera of its own? Did you know that this is where some of the best beaches in the entire country are?

The Makarska Riviera has some truly extraordinary beaches and is a beautiful stretch of coast that very popular among tourists. If you find yourself in the area, be sure to set aside some time to explore the endless surprises of this lovely part of the country. Here are some of its highlights:
1. Markarska Town

Makarska itself is a small city in the Split-Dalmatia county of Croatia, located on the Adriatic coast of Dalmatia, about 60 km southeast of Split. Positioned on a horseshoe-shaped bay between the Biokovo Mountains and the Adriatic, it is known for its palm-fringed promenade, pretty bay and amazing views over the whole Makarska Riviera from Drasnice, Podgora, Tucepi, and Brela, all the way to Split and the islands of Brac, Hvar, Korcula and the Peljesac peninsula. With cobbled streets, plenty of different kinds of eateries and lots of little stores and boutiques, it is an escapist's ideal holiday destination and a magical little world in and of itself.

2. Nikolina Beach

This white pebble beach has a Blue Flag for environmental standards and has facilities like sun beds for hire, showers, and life guards on duty throughout the summer. It is in the resort town of Baska Voda and is a pretty and largely untouched natural gem.

3. Punta Rata Beach

Located on the edge of Brela, this a favourite beach of many visitors and locals and is perfect for families as the seabed slopes very gently into shallow waters. Also equipped with sun beds and umbrellas, it is another unspoiled beach without many other amenities but retains its natural charms, as a result.

4. Biokovo Mountains

The aforementioned Biokovo Mountains overlook the whole Makarska Riviera and is a protected natural area that is perfect for hiking, discovering the typical local herbs, plants and animals, and taking in the incredible views over the area.

5. Kraj Beach

Kraj, or Kamena, Beach is a stunning sandy beach near Tučepi. Surrounded by pine trees that make for a wonderful natural sun shade to protect visitors from overexposure to the sun's rays, it is a long, open beach.
