Drama is a town and the capital of a prefecture of the same name that has “drama” in the name but not in the atmosphere. It is a stunning area of natural beauty located on the north-eastern edge of Greece that is made up of endless plains, mountains, a sprinkling of ski resorts, lush forests of firs, oaks, beeches and pines, burbling streams and rivers, and fields of colourful flowers. Idyllic, unpretentious, authentic and pretty, it is a lesser-known gem in Greece.

During summer, those same mountains and the surrounding hills, plains and forests become wonderful, magic places to hike and explore. There are 70,000 hectares of vivid red fir forests on the Bulgarian border in Macedonia, with some of the trees reaching heights of up to 60m, and it is a sight to behold. The natural wonders don't end there, however.
Another forest in the area, Fraktou, is utterly pristine, is the most important of the three remaining primaeval forests in Europe, and has been listed as a natural monument since 1980. You will also find the beautiful Kato Nevrokopi valley nearby, which flows through with water into the Angitis cave as an underground river. A landscape long ago inhabited by mammoths and rhinos, it is still an amazing natural gem.
The Pyrgos-Petroussa Gorge can't be missed either; a gorge that starts at the village of Pyrgos and unfurls 12km to the slopes of Mt Falakro, filled with dense flora and almost utterly vertical, like a naturally-occurring hallway.
