Attend A Performance Like An Ancient Roman In Patras

Patras Roman Odeon
If you have found a vacation rental in the city of Patrass, Greece, you may be wondering where you should go to take in the ancient history of the area...for what is a trip to Greece without some iconic ruins? Were you even in Greece at all if you don't make time to take in some ruins? That is the question.

Patras has lots of sights and buildings and attractions from various periods throughout history but one that is particularly interesting – and still in use – is the Ancient Odeon of Patras.
Located near the square of Agios Georgios, it was built in the mid-2nd century, shortly before the Herod Atticus Odeon. A theatre with all the necessary components – an auditorium, orchestra, proscenium, stage and backstage – it boasts a capacity of approximately 2,500 spectators and is the main seat of the International Festival of Patras. It is still, to this day, in active use, playing host to both Greek and international artistic groups and performances each summer.

Built before the Odeon of Athens (in 161 AD), during the Augustus period on the first half of the 2nd century BC, it is considered to be the second best decorated Odeon after that of Athens and was rediscovered by accident in the 20th century when excavations were being undertaken at the port. Reconstruction to give the Odeon its original form was then begun and it was eventually completed in 1961. For those spending time in the area, it is a fascinating place to make time to visit and be transported far back in time to ancient history. Better still, if you are visiting this part of Greece during the summer months, you should try and take in a performance in the Odeon to really get the whole experience!
