Lemnos is a Greek island that is the supposed mythic location of the forge of Hephaestus, who was the god of blacksmiths, metallurgy, and all things firey, which is fitting as one of the island's most striking features is its volcanic landscape. In particular, it is the coastal area of Falakro and is rather unique beach that stands out as truly extraordinary.
The legend goes that Hephaestus arrived on the island after Zeus hurled him off Mount Olympus but science tells us that this land was not of his making but the work of Miocene volcanoes that are now long gone. When lava flooded out of the depths of the earth and met the sea, millions of years ago, it petrified and froze into a diverse volcanic landscape of hills, orbs, ripples, spirals and other peculiar rock formations. Locals call these rocks “faraklo” or “fragokefala”, meaning “bald” or “bald heads”, and referring to the orb-formations in particular.

Located on the north part of the island, this area is called the Cape of Falakro, or Falakro, and paints a truly incredible scene, full of natural sculptures and an alien landscape that continues to captivate tourists visiting the island.

Visit during the day for a bright, space-like, barren landscape that will make it seem like you travelled far beyond Greece and right to space, or, at the end of the day for the amazing light-show put on as the shadows dance around the formations and the setting sun bleaches them different colours. Most of all, just be sure to bring your camera as it is something you will want to remember forever!

Just find a vacation rental in the North Aegean and make a point to take a day trip and visit this truly special site – you guaranteed not to regret it!
