It was constructed by the Loula & Evangelos Nomikos Foundation, a foundation that was established in 1979 by the ship owner Evangelos Nomikos in order to fund the purchase and installation of the cable car so that locals and tourists alike would not have to constantly traverse the famous long winding stairs of the city on foot or by mule – an activity that is not pleasant for the elderly, the immobile, small children, or those with heavy baggage.
Today, the cable car can serve up to 1200 people per hour and takes just three minutes to get up to Fira, which is at a rather staggering altitude of 220m. However, it is not just a fast and efficient form of transport, it is an activity in its own right that allows those riding it to take in amazing views over the stunning caldera, the sea, and the volcano below.
