The region of Istria in Croatia is made up of a fertile landscape that is full of verdant valleys and rolling hills blanketed in farms and vineyards. It is an area of truly exceptional natural beauty but is also a place that produces wonderful harvests and is, therefore, a destination in which you can expect to eat well and a brilliant place to holiday if you are a wine-lover. If you have been considering a vacation in Croatia and you want to visit an area where there are some excellent vineyards to visit in the vicinity, then a villa in Istria is just the thing! We have previously written about the modern and stylish Kozlović Winery with its great views and delicious wines and snacks but, among the other wonderful wineries in the region, we are today talking about Benvenuti.
Benvenuti is located in Kaldir, a town positioned on a hillside over the Mirna Valley, that is a patricularly famous fruit-growing area of Istria. The winery dates back to the middle of the 20th century, when Pier Benvenuti planted the vines and established his business. It then became a family affair when his son, Livio, and grandsons, Albert and Nikola, took over and continued the enterprise. Under their care in recent years, Benvenuti has won various awards and gained a reputation for excellence. In 2006, they earned their first championship title at the local Vinistra competition, and then won it again the next year in 2007. Since then, they have won further prizes and medals at international wine competitions such as the Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine Challenge.
Spread over 20 hectares, the vineyard is home to local grape varieties like Malvazija Istarska, Teran, and Muscat Momjanski, which are traditional varieties that have been produced in the Kaldir and Motovun areas for centuries. In addition, international varieties including Nebbiolo, Merlot, and Tempranillo are cultivated to use in a red wine blend that they called Caldierosso. Influenced by the flysch soil (sedimentary rock with white clay rich in limestone) in which the vines are planted and the mesoclimates of the estate’s terraced vineyard created by the presence of the Adriatic Sea around 20km away and the shape of the Mirna Valley, the winery produces a range of distinctly fresh and flavourful and highly-regarded top quality wines. Among these wines there is the Benvenuti Anno Domini Malvazija, considered by many as one of the best white wines produced in Croatia and a benchmark for Malvazija Istarska, in particular. Another noteworthy example among their line-up is the Benvenuti Anno Domini Teran, a red that ages very well and boasts a refined nose of chocolate, forest berry, and licorice and a juicy acidity. The rest of the range is rounded out by more white and reds to choose from as well as a rosé, a sweet Muscat wine, and the Corona Grande dessert wine.
Open for tours, tastings, and special dining experiences, Benvenuti can readily be visited by contacting the family via email at info@benvenutivina.com or by calling +385 98 197 56 51 to arrange your trip. Set in a lush and utterly scenic destination (which is even more magical looking when fog blankets the area in the morning), this is a truly picturesque and wonderful place to come and learn about and try some of Istria's most lauded and beloved local wines. If you have browsed our vacation rentals in Istria and you are looking for a winery to visit during your time in the area, it is a perfect option!
