Among all of the gardens of Provence, however, the Domaine du Rayol stands out as one of the more unique and special examples of this wonderful marriage of manmade and natural beauty. If you are a fan of gardens or pretty views (or great food) and you have found a holiday rental in Provence, then it is certainly a must-see!
Domaine du Rayol (also known as the Jardin botanique du Rayol and the Parc botanique à Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer) is a botanical garden and arboretum that is located in the commune of Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer, right on the coast. Listed as a Remarkable Garden of France by the Committee of Parks and Gardens of the Ministry of Culture of France, it is the most famous attraction in the area and a wonderful place to spend some time, wandering around, admiring plants from all over the globe in one destination while on holiday in Provence.

He built a small farm, a first house that would later become the Hotel del la Mer, and a second house and, in addition to all of this, created elaborate gardens. The original garden had a bastidon and pergola and contained agaves, eucalyptus, heathers, mimosa, palms, and other Mediterranean trees. What we see, today, however, owes a lot to the second owner of the property, Henry Potez.
In the 1940s, he restored the buildings, built a staircase that connected the pergola down to the sea, and then hired a team of ten gardeners to greatly expand it. By 1948, some 400 species were planted on the grounds. Unfortunately, the gardens were then allowed to fall into disrepair and had been completely abandoned by the end of the 1960s. Thankfully, the site was purchased in 1989 by the Conservatoire du Littoral, and the landscape gardeners Gilles Clément and Philippe Deliau fixed up and redesigned the old gardens to create the masterpiece that now exists on the property.

There are a number of different areas spread across the seven hectares of the garden at Domaine du Rayol, each of which is dedicated to plants from various parts of the world. There is, of course, the Mediterranean Garden but there is also: the Arid American Garden, with agave, yucca, pipi cacti, and other plants; the Australian Garden with plants from semi-desert regions such as acacia, from the heathlands such as protea, as well as eucalyptus and other aromatic plants; the California Garden with its California lilacs, oaks, Joshua trees, and more; the Canary Islands Garden with its coastal rock formations, thermophilic shrubs, and pine forest, representing three environments of Tenerife; the Chile Garden with plants from the coast, savanna, and foothills; the underwater plants on the sea-beds of the Baue du Figuier in the Jardin Marin; the humid subtropical plants and forests of the New Zealand Garden; the heather, succulents, and more of the South African Garden; the Subtropical American Garden representing northern Argentina and subtropical Mexico; and the Subtropical Asian Garden with its lovely Chinese bamboo forest and Japanese cycads.
Once you've wandered the globe by exploring the grounds, be sure to head to the Café des Jardiniers for snacks, coffee, cold drinks, cocktails, ice-creams, sweet treats, and meals inspired by the gardens to be enjoyed on the terrace. Open every day (except December 25th), from midday to 2.30 pm for lunch, or for refreshments during the day (from 10.30 am to 12.00 pm and from 2.30 pm up to one hour before the Gardens close), this lovely gem is only accessible to visitors of the gardens.
A wonderful bookshop dedicated to gardening with some 3,000 different titles and a nursery where some of those plants from far flung places can be purchased are also located on the property.
