Spain is one of the best holiday destinations for those looking to enjoy a sun holiday and long days on perfectly picturesque beaches. Most of those that we imagine when we think of a vacation in Spain are made up of powdery soft sand and rich azure waters and, while there are plenty of beaches in Spain that look just like that, there are also many that are more unique or striking. Among them, in the lush and scenic north-western region of Galicia, is the stunning Praia das Catedrais (or the Playa de las Catedrales, meaning the Beach of the Cathedrals). If you have found a villa in Galicia and are looking to visit an exceptionally beautiful beach while spending time in the region, this is one of the most famous and lovely of all.
Designated a Natural Monument by the regional Ministry for the Environment of the Xunta de Galicia, the Praia das Catedrais is actually the name given to the Praia de Augas Santas (meaning Beach of the Holy Waters) by the tourism industry, due to the distinctive rock formations of the beach, which rise in arches and caves and look like naturally-occurring cathedrals. Located in the province of Lugo, about ten kilometres west of Ribadeo, the beach is at its most majestic during low tide, when the waves pull back to reveal a series of various arches and caves. During the low tide, you should abandon your shoes and go stroll along the sand among the naturally-occurring buttresses, high stone ceilings, towering stacks, and the impressive arches and take in the incredible work of Mother Nature and erosion. At high tide, the beach becomes a sliver but some of the rock features and cliff formations can still be admired from the top of the cliff bordering the strand and you'll find that it becomes an excellent swimming spot. Just be careful when viewing from above that you don't get too close to the cliff edges!
It is worth keeping in mind, however, that while visiting the beach is free of charge, those wishing to go there in over Easter Week or in July, August, and September will need to book a slot on the official website. So, if you are spending time in this stunning part of northern Spain and have found a villa in Galicia then be sure to plan a trip to the gorgeous Praia das Catedrais!
