The island of Crete is a truly stunning gem in the Mediterranean that is considered by many to be like a country in its own right and is home to perfect beaches, rising mountains, scenic views, pretty towns, impressive archaeological sites, and more. If you find a villa in Crete, therefore, you will discover that there is really an endless list of things to see and do while on holiday on the island from snorkelling in crystal clear water to hiking along impossibly picturesque routes to eating your way throughout the foodie hotspot that is Chania. However, if you have been really enjoying the coastal pursuits in Crete, in particular, and you want to learn more about the sea life that surrounds the island, then we recommend a visit to CretAquarium, the Aquarium of Crete.
One of the largest and most modern aquariums in Europe and the first of its scale in Greece, the CretAquarium is located near the town of Gournes, 15km east of Heraklion. Home to some sixty tanks containing over 250 species and 2,000 Mediterranean sea creatures, the aquarium is operated by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, a public research institution. Co-financed by the European Investment Bank and the Greek state and opened on the site of the former USAF Iraklion Air Station in 2005, it was greatly expanded between 2008 and 2009 to almost double its original capacity. CretAquarium is part of Thalassokosmos, a complex of buildings owned and operated by the HCMR, and is the largest complex for marine research, technology, and entertainment in the Mediterranean. Established for the development of scientific knowledge and discoveries in Marine Science, the institution and the aquarium aim to promote their research (particularly in regards to the future of human relations with the sea), entertain while educating, raise awareness of the biodiversity of the Mediterranean and about maritime issues to come, and to enhance the relationship between humans and the Mediterranean Sea environment to promote its protection and preservation. Furthermore, they treat injured animals and reintroduce them into the wild and constantly enrich the aquarium with new marine species.
With an ethical basis in preservation and research, top-notch facilities, incredible tools for presenting the habitats of various species and beautiful underwater sceneries that are sure to fascinate while informing, CretAquarium is the perfect place for anyone who wants to learn more about the Mediterranean and is ideal for those who are on vacation in Crete with children. They are experts at presenting species and ecosystems of the Mediterranean. Welcoming millions of visitors each year, this incredible gem is a very popular attraction and tourist destination for a reason. Come walk through underwater worlds, learn more about the sea, be stunned as sharks and jellyfish and schools of colourful little fish swim overhead, discover species that you had never even heard of before, find out how to further love and respect the sea, and make wonderful memories in this magical place. If you're lucky, you might also be planning a visit when a special event will be taking place in the aquarium such as special dining experiences bathed in the mystical blue light of the tanks, art exhibitions, performances and concerts, and more. Check out their website and social media to find out more about any upcoming events.
So, if you have little ones who love the sea and the creatures that live within it (or you are the sea-loving enthusiast yourself), if you want to sprinkle a little learning in your trip, if you want to take a break from the dazzling sun and heat, and if you want to see what all the fuss is about for yourself, find a villa in Crete and come plan a trip to this understandably beloved and very famous aquarium in Greece!
