However, as you do delve into the lush valleys, magical forests, and rugged mountains of Corsica, you may find yourself with some unexpected travel companions... Corsica is actually home to some striking wild and native domestic animals who roam about the place and pop up like delightful surprises as you head out into those captivating landscapes.

Perhaps the cutest of this gang are the wild pigs or, “porcu nustrale”. Not to be confused with wild boars, these guys are not aggressive and can be found all over the place. In fact, they roam freely as they like and are often on the side of the road or hanging out in the forests. Keep an eye out as you drive around the island or as you hike in the mountains or woods and you’ll likely be rewarded with a glimpse of these cuties! One more adorable reason to find a vacation rental in Corsica ASAP.

In fact, there are actually also wild boars in Corsica as well as the aforementioned wild pigs. Dark in colour and a little hairier, the, “U cignale,” tends to be busy finding Corsican chestnuts, acorns, and truffles to eat if they are seen when you are out and about. This diet helps make the wild boar particularly delicious and, therefore, prized by hunters. Wild boar stew is a culinary speciality of Corsica and can be found in various spots throughout the island.

Goats in Corsica

More rare is the, “A muvra,” Corsican sheep, which was poached for a very long time and only exists in small numbers today. Hunting was banned in 1955 and about 100 can be found in and around the massifs of Bavella and Cintu. Brown in colour, these remarkable animals are immediately identifiable by the impressive curving horns that frame their heads.

Another especially charming Corsican native is the, “U sumeru,” donkey, which was occupied with agricultural work in the 1960s but is now mostly spotted near beaches and in tourist areas giving children rides along trails. Then there is the, "Cavallu corsu," horse of Corsica that is a small and stocky creature with a bay, pangaré, or black coat that can be found in the most amazing herds roaming in the mountains. Stumbling across this sight is a magical thing to behold and a true highlight of a holiday in Corisca if you are lucky enough to experience it for yourself. Corsican cows also go about all across the island in herds, as do deer, and goats.
