If you have been talking about a vacation in Rome forever or if you have been to the city before but are dreaming of going back, then we would suggest booking your villa in Rome right now – for Christmas! The Eternal City always has plenty to offer visitors but at this time of the year it is extra magical and here’s why:

The city is adorned with dazzling lights and decorations and is filled with a festive atmosphere and various activities – this makes the famous attractions and landmarks from the Colosseum to St Peter's all the more beautiful!

In the weeks running up to the big day, Christmas concerts will take place, there will be markets, restaurants will serve even more delicious feasts, bakeries will be stuffed with festive treats, shops will be selling special gifts, festive events and attractions will be held, and much more besides, giving you the chance to engage in local traditions and experience a Roman Christmas...

The closer you get to Christmas itself, you’re likely to encounter fewer tourists compared to other times of the year, making it an ideal moment for your visit if you prefer to avoid crowds. Some places close on Christmas Day and New Year's Day and the days between are quiet as people are with their families. Rome is a renowned tourist destination and a vibrant city so it is always a little busy but this is your chance to navigate it without the same kinds of numbers to contend with.

In fact, the absolute best day to explore many of Rome's most famous attractions is December 26th. On this day, the locals are recovering from their festive feasts, and there are fewer tourists around. This means shorter queue times, allowing you to truly enjoy visiting these attractions and spending more time admiring them rather than waiting in line. For instance, at the Colosseum, where queues are typically at least an hour long, this opportunity is particularly valuable. Other sites like the Forum and Borghese Gallery offer similar experiences, but please note that the Vatican Museums don't reopen until December 27th.

As a general rule, shops will be closed on both December 25th and 26th, and unlike in the UK and Ireland, there won't be post-Christmas sales on the 26th, as Italy strictly regulates sales, which occur only twice a year. However, all of these aspects contribute to the unique experience of Rome during this time of year, when the crowds diminish, giving you more space to savour and appreciate this truly magical place at your own pace.

So, if you want to have Rome (somewhat) to yourself and enjoy the surroundings of the city at their most festive and pretty or you’re looking to spend the Holidays on holidays somewhere special, then browse our amazing array of vacation rentals in Rome today.
