Catalonia is a region of Spain with especially scenic areas and a whole host of beautiful towns and villages. Among these, one of the most picturesque has to be Castellfollit de la Roca, in the province of Girona. Surrounded by tree-covered hills and overlooking a valley between the Fluviá and Toronell Rivers, this unique town is perched on a sheer basalt rock face 50m high, painting an incredibly striking image. The Old Town dates to the Middle Ages and is made up of charming, winding little streets and pretty, historic buildings. Known as the Hanging Town, it is a great place to stop for a meal and a wander while hiking in the area and looks like something right from a fairy tale. Book one of our villas in Catalonia and head out to explore its impossibly beautiful landscapes on your next vacation, making sure to see this wonder with your own eyes on your adventures!

Castellfollit de la Roca is specifically located at the entrance to the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, a protected natural area and an important volcanic landscape in Europe and the best example in the Iberian Peninsula. Stretching over 12,000 hectares with more than 40 volcanic cones and 20 lava flows, it is inactive currently though not extinct. The last eruptions took place between 15,000 and 10,000 years ago, which is considered relatively recent! An area of impossibly lush green forestry cut through by those two great rivers, it is a verdant and beautiful place to explore and hike.

As we have noted, if you are out hiking or driving around this picture-perfect part of the Spanish countryside then a stop at Castellfollit de la Roca to admire its unique beauty and explore only heightens (quite literally) your experience of this gorgeous corner of the world. Or maybe you might plan to come simply to see this town that so often features on the tourism imagery of the region with your own eyes. Either way, you won’t regret visiting this beautiful area during a vacation in Spain and a stay in one of our holiday rentals in Catalonia
