In the last post in this series on Croatian cuisine, we are wrapping up our list of typical dishes and foods that you need to make time to seek out and try while you holiday in Croatia. 7. Pašticada

As we noted in the first post in this series, Croatian cuisine is largely rooted in peasant traditions and, as such, like Tuscan cuisine, it is generally hearty, simple and tasty. A representative example of one of these hearty dishes is Dalmatinska Pašticada, also simply known as Pašticada. Originating in the region of Dalmatia, it is a stewed beef dish cooked in a special sauce and normally served alongside gnocchi or some homemade pasta.

4. Arancini

This choice made it on our list and is great because it is not only a treat you can enjoy while holidaying in Croatian but it is also a perfect souvenir to bring home. Arancini are traditional sweets from southern Croatia.

2. Fritule

…a dessert! Fritule are the most common sweets to be found in coastal Croatia, all along the Adriatic.

Croatia has blown up as a tourist destination in recent years, at least partially because of Game of Thrones. Before this larger crowd descended upon the country, it was visited by tourists – largely close European neighbours – who were in the know. People who have found a vacation rental in Croatia and are coming today for the iconic television show tours, picture-perfect beaches, architectural gems and incredible historic quarters of her cities, might be a little less informed on what they can really expect and one of the things that they may not know as much about is Croatia's cuisine.
