Richtis Gorge, Waterfall
A vacation rental in Crete is a wonderful idea for those who love the great outdoors. It is famously home to some truly exceptional beaches and has a diverse and picturesque landscape, both of which afford the natural facilities necessary for all kinds of adventures. Whether you're interested in swimming, kayaking, snorkelling, cycling, walking, rafting, exploring caves, canyoning, hiking, or more, you'll be able to find somewhere to do it while on vacation in Crete. In particular, the hiking possibilities are especially rich and scenic from the wonderful views and range of routes afforded by the impressive peaks of the White Mountains and National Park on the western side of the island, near Samariá Gorge, to the famous and well-trodden canyon trails through Chania and Imbros Gorge. Another excellent and highly picturesque hiking option that is especially magical is the route through Richtis Gorge that ends at a majestic waterfall.

Richtis Gorge is located in a state-protected park near Exo Mouliana, Sitia, in eastern Crete, Greece. Just a few kilometers long and not especially difficult, this is an excellent option for beginners, those with kids in the party, or those looking for something that packs a serious punch. The whole route should only take a couple of hours each way and the elevation difference between the starting point and the beach is about 350 meters in total. The only real concern or consideration to keep in mind is that sections of the trail can be quite steep with stones that make it slippery. Just be sure to take these areas slowly and to watch your footing so that you do not fall. It is also probably a good idea to ensure that you are wearing sturdy and closed shoes to improve your grip and protect your feet.     Read More

White Mountains
The stunning island of Crete is a natural gem that boasts incredible beaches, pretty views, and excellent hiking routes. If you have found a villa in Crete and you are interested in hiking, in particular, then you should seek out the White Mountains, or Lefka Ori. The largest and most scenic massif on the island, this is the best place to head for incredible panoramas and a wonderful range of hiking routes that are suitable for a wide variety of levels of experience and fitness in hiking. Whether you want to just go for a stroll and take some photos of this beautiful landscape in Greece that surrounds or you want to spend a whole day hiking and working up a good sweat, you'll find what you're looking for if you head to the White Mountains.

Taking up a good portion of the centre of West Crete, the White Mountains are the main feature of the area and loom large and impressive in the background throughout the area. Made of limestone, they take their name from the fact that their peaks remain dusted in a white cap of snow late into the spring (with some of the highest peaks managing to hold onto some snow right up to June) and that the limestone summits reflect the sun and appear white as a result in the summer months as well. The highest peak is Pachnes at 2,453m but there are over thirty more summits in the range that are higher than 2,000m. In addition, the range is home to endless caves, sinkholes, precipices, meadows, unique landscapes (such as the moon-like desert in the centre and southern part of the range), fascinating rock formations, and more. There are also 50 rocky gorges, the most famous of which is the gorge of Samaria, where trekking, canyoning, and other outdoor pursuits are possible. This diverse landscape is, furthermore, home to a great variety of flora and fauna, much of which is found nowhere else, not even on other parts of the island.     Read More

Glyka Nera
Beautiful beaches are in no short supply in Greece but if you have found a vacation rental in Crete and are looking for some particularly scenic and picturesque examples then we have an excellent suggestion of one of her loveliest. Crete's beaches boast those kind of impossibly blue seas, dramatically craggy cliffs, and perfectly scenic settings that make people sigh immediately upon seeing a picture and wish themselves there...well, sigh no longer and get planning a trip to one Crete and one of her most stunning (which is really saying something) beaches; the truly magical Glyka Nera

Located in the Chania region, 43km west of Chora Sfakion and 75km south of the city of Chania, on the far southwest of Crete, Glyka Nera immediately captivates with its striking appearance and sheltered setting that is so far removed from the outside world (you'll need to take a boat or trek to it). Ranked one of the best beaches in Crete, Greece, and Europe, it is named Glyka Nera, or, “sweet water,” for the freshwater springs that gush out of the fine pebbly beach at various intervals.     Read More

Lake Kournas, panorama
If you think of a holiday in Crete or Greece, you are likely to picture plenty of time on her incredible beaches, enjoying the stunning deep blue of the sea meeting the pale shores, the pleasant water temperatures, the great weather, and the beautiful surroundings. However, in addition to her beaches, her most obvious and well-known trait, the island is also home to lots of other amazing natural wonders and little surprises to uncover as you explore. One such incredible gem is Lake Kournas.

The only freshwater lake in Crete, this relatively large (at a maximum length of 1.087km and a maximum breadth of 0.88km) and shallow (at 22.5m at its deepest point) but stunning lake is located in a valley among the hills, surrounded by a particularly beautiful landscape, just a few kilometres from the sea. Known as Lake Koressia in antiquity, it is now named for the Arabic word, “kurna,” for, “lake,” (or bath) so calling it Lake Kournas in English is kind of like calling it Lake Lake!     Read More
