The Old Fortress in Corfu, Greece, is a 15th century Venetian fortress, with origins going back to the Byzantine period, that is located on a promontory in Corfu that was where the old town of the city was originally located. An imposing and massive building, it looms over everything else in the area and dominates the landscape – if you're visiting Corfu town, you won't be able to miss it! It is also a symbol of pride for the town and home to cultural events and exhibitions, attracting thousands of visitors each year. If you have found a vacation rental in Corfu, make sure to pay it a visit!
While the earliest roots of the fortress itself date back to the Byzantines, there are actually older foundations of a fortification on the site that date to the 6th century, after the destruction of the ancient city of Corcyra by the Goths. As noted, the whole medieval town of Corfu was once occupied inside the boundaries of the peninsula but, today, it is merely home to the Old Fortress, which in the early 15th century, was rebuilt over the old Byzantine fortifications by the Venetians.
The Fortress is now home to the Public library of Corfu, which has been placed inside the old British barracks, and the grounds are also used for various types of art and culture exhibitions. Furthermore, the Hellenic Music Research Lab of the Ionian University is also located on the grounds, it having transformed entirely from a military to a cultural institution over the centuries. Boasting stunning views over the town and bay, impressive architectural might and fascinating details, a long and rich history and a calendar of events, it is one of the city's main attractions and a definite must for anyone who is visiting the town of Corfu.
