There are lots of amazing wineries around the world. These wineries make incredible wines, of course, but there are also plenty of them that are works of art in their own right. There are lots that are housed in old villas or fascinating new architectural gems, sprawling estates, or stunning natural surroundings.
Yet, among all of these, the most extraordinary of all has to be the incredible Bodegas Güell. Sadly, it is no longer actually a winery but it is still a restaurant that can be visited to this day and is a rarity: a winery designed by Antoni Gaudí.
Yet, among all of these, the most extraordinary of all has to be the incredible Bodegas Güell. Sadly, it is no longer actually a winery but it is still a restaurant that can be visited to this day and is a rarity: a winery designed by Antoni Gaudí.
Commissioned in 1882 by Eusebi Güell, Gaudí’s most important and influential private patron, the Bodegas Güell winery was built between 1895 and 1897. While it is one of his more understated works, it is still visibly a distinctively Gaudí building that features a triangular front profile, steeply sloping roof, asymmetrical elements and flights of fancy. The complex is made up of the main winery building and other outbuildings that were used in the wine-making process and the main building is composed of three floors: a ground floor for parking vehicles, an apartment on the first floor and a domed chapel on the top floor.
While this is one of Gaudí’s less famous buildings, it is still a Gaudí and attracts far less tourists. As a result, you can enjoy it more peacefully and, while you're at it, grab some food in this incredibly scenic setting! Located in Garraf, in the municipality of Sitges, it is an easy day trip from Barcelona. So, if you have found a vacation rental in Barcelona and you're looking to enjoy Gaudí at your leisure and take a little break from the city for a while, just head to the fascinating and lovely Bodegas Güell.
