Croatia is an already beloved and an increasingly popular summer holiday destination but it is also a wonderful destination for an Autumn or Winter break. With stunning landscapes painted burned hues in Autumn, seaside resorts that are still enjoyable relatively late into the year, towns that twinkle with Christmas lights in winter, small tourist crowds after the Summer, and all sorts of seasonal events, there are plenty of reasons to plan an off-season getaway in Croatia.

Croatia may not be the first destination that comes to mind when one thinks of an Autumn or Winter holiday but whether you are looking for a city break over a weekend or an extended vacation where you'll often still have warm weather later into the season and smaller crowds, it really is a great choice. There are lots of reasons to plan a trip: all of the events that take place during the harvest season and then in the run up to Christmas festivities, things are quieter and calmer, and prices are lower. One of the best things about Dubrovnik is the landscape of the city itself. The old town, by the harbour, as made so iconic by Game of Thrones, is charming and atmospheric. The rich blue of the waters is set against the bright grey stone walls and buildings and red rooftops. It is quite the sight to behold and reason enough to visit the city. 7. Pašticada

As we noted in the first post in this series, Croatian cuisine is largely rooted in peasant traditions and, as such, like Tuscan cuisine, it is generally hearty, simple and tasty. A representative example of one of these hearty dishes is Dalmatinska Pašticada, also simply known as Pašticada. Originating in the region of Dalmatia, it is a stewed beef dish cooked in a special sauce and normally served alongside gnocchi or some homemade pasta.
