Nice is an incredibly beautiful French town; historic, charming and perched picturesquely on the French Riviera. It boasts excellent shops, lovely beaches, great restaurants and pretty streets as well as plenty to see and do. However, one of the best things that the city has to offer are the endless and specialised markets where you can get everything from antiques to fresh fish, just off the boat.

One of the best of these markets is the ever-changing market of Cours Saleya which sells food in the mornings, flowers all day and antiques on Mondays. If you want to spend your holiday wandering pretty historic streets, taking in the sea breeze and sampling fresh local delicacies, Nice is the perfect relaxing location. Cours Saleya, market
Located in the Old Town, the Cours Saleya market overflows with fresh produce, cheeses, olives, herbs and flowers each morning. Open from 6am Tuesday to Sunday, the best deals are in the tin pans which go for €1.50 or €2 but prices begin to drop all over once the noon cannon goes off and vendors try and sell everything off before the market closes at 1pm. After this time, the food selling ends but you can continue to purchase flowers. This famous, fragrant and charming part of the market is a historic tradition that goes back to when Nice was the carnation-growing capital of France, and sent its flowers all over Europe.

A small local farmers market is located on the side of the market next to the church and here you can find organic produce such as Pierre Magnani's 54 varieties of forgotten tomato strains grown in the hills above Nice. The food market has plenty of other delights such as local cheeses, olives, duck pate, crusty baguettes, row upon row of spices, fresh fruit and much more besides. In fact, the National Council for the Culinary Arts has ranked the Cours Saleya as one of the country's special markets and is, therefore, a must.
Cours Saleya, products
On Mondays, Cours Saleya turns into a sprawling Antique Market or ‘Brocante’, where you can find antiques, collectibles and fascinating French bric-a-brac and in the summer it becomes a Summer Night Crafts Market from 6pm each day. Everything is handmade by local artists and there is a lovely festive atmosphere. For those visiting Nice, the market, in any and every iteration really is a must-see.
